It’s more like 7

Adapting to any situation is key.  To prevent you from having to carry a ton of gear, you want items that can be used in multiple situations and multiple purposes.

These are items that are a must for any survival or self-reliance scenario.  These items should be considered first and stored in every location that you find yourself.

The reason we highlight these items, is for one simple reason.  Each of these can be very difficult to create or reproduce in a natural of isolated location.

I added an additional item to the list for the urban prepper.  So now we have the 5+1 C’s of Survivability.

Cutting Tool

Just like in the kitchen, every blade servers a specific purpose.  If you have the task of chopping a tree, cutting through a seat belt, or filleting a fish, consider the tool you need for the job.  Let’s look at a few specific items and some multi purpose.

Combustion

This involves more than just rubbing two sticks together.  Building a fire can be easy with minimal resources.  Maintaining the fire can prove to be more difficult.  Lets dive.

Cover & Shelter

Protecting yourself from the elements is extremely important.  The comforts of home can be taken with you in a pinch.  If you plan, it could mean the different between sitting in the mud or a chair while you consider your next move.

Container

Having a sustainable cool drink at your side takes work.  If you do not have a renewable source of fresh water available, you have to create your own.  Plastic bottles are nice, but can you boil water in them?  Yes you can.

Cordage

Having cordage available can help with making tools handles more comfortable to securing yourself in a tornado (haven’t you seen Twister!).  having rope could provde to be useless if you do not know how to properly tie a knot.

Communication

When in an urban environment, this may be a necessity.  It’s important to know where everyone is going so you can potentially not be in that place..  A cellphone is great, but it relies on land based repoeaters and them having power.  Here are some alternatives.

Candles

Expect darkness anywhere you go.  If you are not able to make a fire or need to see underwater,, you are going to need light that is mobile and dependable.
